چکیده

The lineshape and intensity of SFG signals of CO adsorbed on supported Pd nanoparticles and Pd(111) are analyzed. For CO/Pd(111) nearly symmetric lorentzian lineshapes were observed. Applying two different visible wavelengths for excitation, asymmetric lineshapes observed for the CO/Pd/Al2O3/NiAl(110) system are explained by a lower resonant and a higher non-resonant SFG signal and a change in the phase between resonant and non-resonant signals, most likely originating from an interband transition in the NiAl substrate. The relative intensity of different CO species (hollow, bridge, on-top) was modeled by DFT calculations of IR transition moments and Raman activities. While the (experimental) sensitivity of SFG towards different CO species strongly varies, the calculated IR and Raman activities are rather similar. The inability to exactly reproduce experimental SFG intensities suggests a strong coverage dependence of Raman activities or that non-linear effects occur that can currently not be properly accounted for. 2005 Elsevier B.V. High-Pressure Studies of CO Adsorption on Pd(111) by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Sum-Frequency Generation

High-pressure CO adsorption on Pd(111) was examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) from 200 to 400 K, and in a pressure range from 10-6 to 1 mbar. Even in the millibar regime both methods indicated that CO adsorbed in “regular” adsorption sites such as hollow, bridge, and on-top. By combination of XPS and SFG, a quantitative analysis of ...

Piperidine adsorption on hydrated alpha-alumina (0001) surface studied by vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy.

The adsorption of piperidine vapor on the hydrated alumina (alpha-Al2O3, corundum) (0001) surface was investigated using vibrational broad bandwidth and scanning sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. The interfacial vibrational signature in the C-H stretching region of piperidine at the alumina (0001) surface is shown to be a sensitive spectroscopic probe revealing the adsorption mechani...

Surface enhanced sum frequency generation of carbon monoxide adsorbed on platinum nanoparticle arrays

Sum frequency generation ~SFG! vibrational spectroscopy is used to study the adsorption of CO at ;1 atm pressure on Pt nanoparticle arrays and Pt thin films. The SFG signal of CO adsorbed on platinum particles of 45 nm diameter is ;10 000 times larger than from CO on smooth Pt films. The large enhancement is explained by plasmon resonance and Maxwell–Garnett theory. The Pt arrays are prepared u...

Adsorption of 4-picoline and piperidine to the hydrated SiO2 surface: probing the surface acidity with vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy.

Vapor adsorption is an important process influencing the migration and the fate of many organic pollutants in the environment. In this study, vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy was used to study the adsorption of two surface acidity probe molecules, 4-picoline (pKa = 5.94) and piperidine (pKa = 11.24), onto the amorphous SiO2 surface. The adsorption of 4-picoline onto the s...
